As the largest and best fortified fort in the entire colonial region during the mid-xxxx's, the original Fort Pitt was an important strategic location because of its river access and as a primary meeting place to trade with the local Indians. Fort Pitt became the nucleus around which "Pittsborough" sprouted. The Fort Pitt Blockhouse (xxxx) survives as the oldest standing building in Pittsburgh today.
